      After we had crossed the river we could travel faster, although the ground was rather swampy, but by then the soldiers had started to cross. "Run away from me, and run in a zigzag," I shouted. The soldiers could not fire very accurately while crossing the river, and none of the bullets came near us. Then I heard Moon Hee scream, "I've twisted my ankle, you go on, leave me."
      I turned, "No. I'm not leaving you."
      "You must. Save yourself. I'm a spy, I tricked you. I told Captain Jang."
      You bitch, after letting me think you liked me. I ran away from her, and then I heard her shout something, ".. you."
      I turned. "I love you," she shouted again.
      "Oh, Hell." I ran on, and then back, and then back to her as fast as I could. Again she told me to save myself, but I ignored her and gave her a fireman's lift on to my shoulder - she couldn't have weighed more than about 45 kilos, and I tried to run with her. Soon all I could manage was a fast walk, and the soldier's bullets were getting more accurate. "You didn't really tell Captain Jang, did you ?" I gasped.
      "No, of course not. I just wanted you to leave me and save yourself. He must have guessed and chased after us."
      The shooting stopped. Then we heard more firing, but this time it was coming from farther up the river, and on our side.
      "It's Chinese soldiers," she shouted. "They must have heard the shooting. They will force the Koreans back across the river and we will be safe."
      I stopped, sat her down and got my breath back.
