The next few days were very pleasant and
relaxed. Then an English diplomat came from Beijing. I have no time for
bureaucracy, and I told him, "Get me, and Moon Hee to England. I'm
a British citizen, and she is a refugee, fleeing for her life from the
bullets of North Korean soldiers. Read the report of the Chinese soldiers
who rescued us if you don't believe me." He said he didn't have the
power - didn't want to risk anything in his career more likely. "Look,
I've been kidnapped, if you want the glory of rescuing me, you'll have
to do what I want - all of it, or I go back to Pyongyang, and you become
the diplomat who didn't rescue me when you had the chance."
He was actually rather good. He arranged
for the local indecency charge to be officially dropped, got me a temporary
passport, got immigration papers for Moon Hee to enter England as a refugee,
and even arranged some money for me to buy an engagement ring for her.
Apparently there is an old Korean tradition that if a man sees a lady -
as she is - he must marry her, and who am I to go against tradition ?
As we were flying back to England,
we had lots of time to talk. "Well, I suppose the radar system is
still not working, and so Colonel Kim's daughter is safe from Captain Jang."
"Oh, I do hope so," she said,
"and I hope she marries someone soon, before the system ever does
work."
"You seem very concerned about
her. But she must still wait for her elder sister to be married first,
mustn't she ?"
"Not now," said Moon Hee,
looking up at me and smiling, "Who do you think is Colonel Kim's eldest
daughter ?"
